Roles and responsibilities for elected positions within our Society are as follows:
- Must be an active ESPNIC member (in “good standing”)
- Show commitment and be in position to sustain reliable communication (especially e-mail) with the ESPNIC Office
- All positions require substantial commitment of time and energy. Consequently candidates should be willing to commit himself/ herself to the task
- The Executive Committee is in charge of the management of the Society
- The Executive Committee holds the decision power regarding Society matters
- The Executive Committee represents the Society
- The Executive Committee holds meetings in regular intervals, at least two times a year
- The Executive Committee delegates specific tasks to committees of the Society
The main role of both President-elect position is to help and support the presidents in running the Society. They are a voting member of the Executive Committee. Both the Medical and Nursing President-elects, will automatically become the next Presidents in June 2023, and remain in the Executive Committee ex officio as Past-Presidents after that. They should therefore be involved with all working aspects of the Society. Each of those presidency terms will last for 2 years.
During the last General Assembly, the members approved the creation of a new communication officer position, but there were some reservations that did not go unheard. Until more clarity is sought, both President-elects will take the lead for the communication strategy of the society, providing guidance, support, and coordination of all ESPNIC´s communication channels, promotional activities, website, and social media.

- Responsible for all financial aspects of the Society
- Provides budgets and financial reports for EC meetings and the General Assembly
- Contributes in strategy and objective setting for the Society
- Contributes in development of all aspects of Society
- The terms of office are 3 years RENEWABLE ONCE.
- Responsible for the scientific development and proceedings of the annual congress and any other courses
- Responsible for representing all views about paediatric and neonatal intensive care, regardless of base specialty and personal, scientific interests
- Represents the interests of research committees and other groups in the Executive Committee
- Represents the interests of working groups and sections in the Executive Committe
- The terms of office are 3 years RENEWABLE ONCE.
- Takes lead in the organisation of educational activities of the Society
- Represents the interests of Education and training committee, working groups and sections in the Executive Committee
- Works closely with those involved with the society’s educational activities e.g. the Diploma Advisory Board/Education Committee
- The terms of office are 3 years RENEWABLE ONCE.
- Motivated and dedicated young professional
- Brings issues affecting trainee members to the EC
- Represents trainees: for ESPNIC to European and International Bodies, to ESPNIC Diploma/education teams and to those organising the society’s conferences.
- Works with the secretary to encourage trainees to join and participate fully in the society
- Ensures the society remains/becomes more relevant to trainees
- The terms of office are 3 years – NON RENEWABLE.
Section chairs are members of the Scientific Affairs Division, representing their section. They are expected to lead the activities framework of the sections, facilitating communication and workflow amongst section members; they should promote and coordinate ESPNIC educational activities, research initiatives and content development for the different communication channels of the society.
They are accountable for providing a yearly action plan, performance indicators and budget (if applicable) to the Executive Committee, and to monitor and report the progress of such actions in a regular basis. They are also expected to chair and organize section meetings during the congress.
Terms of office are 3 years, renewable once. Current Section Chairs in their first mandate can apply for a second term. Interim section chairs and approved grace periods will not have the served time counted towards the maximum office terms.
Deputy chairs are members of the Scientific Affairs Division, supporting the Section Chairs in representing their section. They are expected to co-lead and support the Section Chair on developing the activities framework of the sections, facilitating communication and workflow amongst section members; they should promote and coordinate ESPNIC educational activities, research initiatives and content development for the different communication channels of the society.
They represent the Section Chair when unavailable and contribute to the management and coordination of the section for all aforementioned tasks.
A working group lead represents the working group and coordinates its activities. They report to the Chair of Scientific Affairs.
